Task 3: Creating a digital activity for the 21st century classroom

Choose one tech tool we have used during this module (or another one you already use) and design an activity for your learners based on the principles of 21st century teaching and learning and technology integration.

Describe the group (level and age), the aims, the steps and the resources you will be using.
These questions may help you:
What? (What is the technology?)
Who? (Who are the learners?)
Where? (Where are they going to perform the activity? At home, in class, in te lab?)
When? (When are they going to do that? During the class, after the class, before the class?)
Why? (What is the aim of the activity? How will it enhance students' language learning? How will it prepare students for the 21st century and the digital age?)
How? (How will it be done? Describe the steps for the activity)

Then, share it here with the group.

  7. TASK 3:
    - Tool: Wordle
    - Learners: Young teenagers, Basic level.
    - They are going to perform the activity in class, in small groups. Each group will have at least one student who has a device.
    - The aim of the activity is to review vocabulary students have previously learned. It will enhance their learning because they will have to revisit the vocabulary in order to create their word clouds. It will introduce students to a new way of organizing and studying vocabulary.
    - Students will sit in small groups. Each group will have at least one students with his/her device. Each group will be assigned one different book page in which they had a vocabulary lesson. They copy the vocabulary into Wordle and make their cloud of words. After that, they share it in our Facebook private group and Teacher prints their posters to be displayed in the classroom as a source of vocabulary corner.

Follow-up activity done in the classroom, in order to consolidate the learning of Imperative verbs.
They will use smartphones with internet access to film and post the video.
Activity will be done in groups of three learners. They will make a video selling some product chosen by them, remembering that they should use the verbs learned in the Imperative mode. The video will be posted privately on YOUTUBE.

    1. That's a nice activity, Marcela. However, the video should be the final product of a communicative activity rather than the main activity. Students should work in groups, communicating, collaborating and interacting in order to create an advertisement. Just then, they will use technology to make their videos. Can you see how this changes the perspective of language learning? Then, why are they gosing to post the videos on You Tube? Are they going to have any kind of debate online analysing each other's videos? This would be a great follow-up activity!
BTW, I couldn't find your reflection post. Have you done it?

    1. Hi Flavia,
This activity is really meaningful and personalized. However, how will it promote 21st centuty skills? How creating their posters at home will students develop communication, interaction and collaboration? How can you make this activity more collaborative and communicative?

    1. Cool poster! I just wonder how you will be using it with your students? How meaningful is it to create a poster about grammar rules? Wouldn't it be more meaningful and relevant to students to create a poster about themselves applying what they have learned? It would be more personalized and meaningful and less grammar-focused. As to encourage other skills as collaboration, communication and interaction, you could have students work in pairs or groups creating their posters or sharing their posters online for on-line debates. Think about it! ;)

  11. Pos-task: creating an activity
    - Beginners
    - Course
    - Teenagers
    - Daily routine – simple present (affirmative).
    - Padlet
    * I am going to ask to the students to bring their tablet/laptop to the course. The activity will be done in pairs during the class so that I can help them. The one that doesn’t have the tablet will share it with another student.
They are going to use padlet to create a poster. It will have the activities that they do during the week and also weekend. The aim is to show them how the structure of the present tense is. As they are working in pairs, they will say to the class what are the activities that other one does. So they will remind the difference between the first and the third person.
Using a new tool will show them that learning can be easy and funny at the same time.

    2. From a task-based communicative approach, the poster should be the final product of a communicative activity in which students will interact and communicate using the target language.

  13. I am planning an activity to use with a group of basic students, between 11 and 13 at a language school. As the school has just received I-Pads to be incorporated in the lessons, I am going to use the App Chatter Pix. This app is used to bring simple stories to life, by turning pictures into talking pictures where students have to choose an object, create a story, record it, add stickers, frames, text, etc. Then, they publish it and share their story with their classmates. Everything will be done during the class. The aim of the activity is to write a story in pairs, and give it life by using the app. I believe it will enhance students’ language learning and prepare them for the 21st century as they will have to create a story collaboratively, share learning, use the language not only to write but also to speak and negotiate.
Steps: - Brainstorm about a topic (An embarrassing situation).
    - Create a story collaboratively.
    - Bring it to life by using the app (picture, recording, stickers, and so on)
    - Share it with their classmates.
    - To wrap up, they will discuss about how they felt while doing the activity: involved? bored? enthusiastic?

    1. Sorry, Maria Angela, I just saw this post after sending you the feedback. So, please, diregard the part about the activity. I am including the grade in my list.
That is a great activity that besides working on language productive skills (speaking and writing, besides reading later) also enhances students' 21st century skills such as collaboration, creativity, communication and interaction as students are going to work in groups creating their own story using their I-pads. Great job! =)

    Technology: Padlet (internet)
    Module: basic (teenagers)
They are going to perform the activity in the lab, during the class.
The activity will improve knowledge in the students, besides promoting interaction between students and teacher.
First the students are supposed to watch the video; Then they are going to do two different exercises: an oral activity, organizing the sentences; and a written one, where they will describe their routine in the blog.
